Next Crestfall Video - What Would You Like To See?

34 posts in this topic

So just in case...

  • there is no video in this thread
  • this thread does not suggest or imply that any video will be released shortly
  • this is just a fact-finding, opinion orientated thread to get feedback

Right, now that we've got that out of the way we have some simple maths. This is the 21st March, if our devs deliver on their aspirations then CF will release in the next nine months, worst case scenario. Our expert media people will be required to provide a number of promotional events to highlight the server and its capabilities. The most potent of these formats will be by video.

Looking at the timelines and based on the continuation of beta testing (now with vastly improved numbers), as a community you'd hope that we'd get our first new video before the start of the summer. That being the case, a list of very simple questions:

  1. What would you like to see in the video(s)?
  2. Why specifically do you want to see these things?
  3. Should the videos contain a number of different things or concentrate on one specific element?
  4. How long should the video be?
  5. Would you prefer the videos to be low-key, technical and minimalist or OMG flashy neon awesomeness? Somewhere in between?
  6. Lastly, should the video just let the facts speak for themselves or should we compare and contrast with stock MaNGOS servers?

Again just to reiterate, the expectation is that the community here gives this some thought and comes back with some good ideas and suggestions. Not saying that we'll implement any of these, but I'll pass them on as a suggestion box, hopefully stuffed. I'd prefer to open this topic up early now, rather than have people put a lot of hard work into a video that the community give a collective meh to.

As always, thanks for your time.

  1. What would you like to see in the video(s)?
Initially, I'd like to see some of the common game mechanics complained about demonstrated (mob and pet pathing, fear, mob linkage, maybe certain quests that are commonly broken). In a later video I'd love to see some of the scripting for early raid fights.

I know they aren't going to announce release date but some more specific indication of their progress would be nice. A percentage completed or even just expected release in Q3. I've pretty much stopped playing WoW waiting for CF at this point, so whether CF comes out in summer or Christmas 2017 is a big difference for me.

  2. Why specifically do you want to see these things?
To demonstrate the (hopefully) high quality of CF and build hype.

  3. Should the videos contain a number of different things or concentrate on one specific element?
I think each video should be more focused and then have multiple videos to cover the various things you want to highlight/demonstrate.

  4. How long should the video be?
Depends on the content. I think 3-5 minutes of gameplay set to background music wouldn't be bad, but if you wanted to narrate it and demonstrate multiple things than 10-20 minutes would probably be more appropriate.

  5. Would you prefer the videos to be low-key, technical and minimalist or OMG flashy neon awesomeness? Somewhere in between?
I'd like the first few videos to be more low-key and technical and slowly get more flashy as actual release comes closer. I think starting out super flashy with potentially 9 months until release would prematurely build hype that would then dissipate when the actual release came.

  6. Lastly, should the video just let the facts speak for themselves or should we compare and contrast with stock MaNGOS servers?
Let the facts speak for themselves. I'm sure someone else will do a video comparison, let them them sling mud.

I know this may not be the majority opinions, but personally I would like to see more boring technical things working flawlessly such as:

The auction house
Mob aggro radius and pathing at different levels
A variety of dungeon/boss mechanics
Spell interactions
Actions that should/shouldn't trigger PvP
Gathering nodes

Things like that. The reasoning is pretty simple; we expect to have the most technically sound server, so let's show that off.

Several short videos under 5-10 minutes, one per topic would suit me. Along the lines of the Wildstar promotional videos if you've seen/remember those, though more detail and less craziness. Ideally we could do them without doing a compare/contrast to a MaNGOS server, but some things just would not be discernible otherwise. However, I absolutely would not want to see any other server named in the videos.

Honestly though, at this point I'm so thirsty for the server to launch that you could follow a squirrel for 10 minutes and I would watch it and enjoy every moment of it.

A bunch of level 60 dungeons boss/mob mechanics would be pretty cool. For example show UBRS with things that some servers seem to have wrong, such as rend fights with how each wave spawns in and when the gates close or pulling the last boss with like a hunter and kties toward the beast room and feign deaths how the interaction works stuff like that.

I don't have much experience with private servers, so I don't know much about common bugs or things that often don't work correctly, but I'll just chime in.

1. What I would like to see would be, for example, that Charge works correctly, meaning the character stops in front of the target, not behind it. Another thing would be mobs turning towards a stealthed character shortly before discovering the character. One last thing I can think of would be ore nodes not spawning on top of each other, although I don't know if it's possible to really show off in a video.

2. Those would be things that, for me personally, would show off the Crestfall staffs capabilities and attention to detail, to help distinguish the project from other, similar ones.

3. + 4. Videos in the 5-10 minute range showing off a few related elements at a time would be a good solution, I believe.

5. Personally I'm not a fan of ultra-flashy, meme-ridden videos, so I'd prefer low-key, detailed videos. But to build hype and a solid playerbase, some flashy-ness is probably necessary. Just don't go all out on the neon flashy awesomeness and everything will be fine. :D

6. As Retrac47 said, comparisons will probably be necessary for some smaller, harder to discern things, but letting the facts speak for themselves most of the time could send a strongl signal.

Pets, mobs pathing and generally broken quests are the things I'd like to see working. Smarter people than I might appreciate seeing spells and resistances and whatnot interacting and working correctly but I (and the vast majority of players) don't know how they're supposed to work to begin with, so in a hype video intended to draw as many players as possible, you should focus on highlighting features that everyone understands and recognizes, i.e. quests that everyone has done and seen to be broken on other servers, kodos and boats saying "Greetings <Player>", seasonal events working etc.

I wouldn't mind a direct comparison to other servers. It's not like there are some marketing regulations that you have worry about like real companies do. If CF has features that work and other servers don't, and you can prove it beyond doubt, show it. Just be ready for supporters of other projects to make similar comparisons if CF launches with something broken. I guess whether you do this or not depends on how confident the devs are with their product at launch. I wouldn't consider it mud slinging like Calfuron said, as long as the comparisons are valid.

1. A release date

2. So I know when I can play

3. One thing, when can I play?

4. 3 secs

5. I guess a flashy neon green date with butterflies and naked chicks gushing out wouldn't hurt.

I am staying patient, but all I really want anymore is to delve in.

I would like to see some exciting things in it.

I would like to see..:

  • Path AI:
    • Pets in caves.
    • Mob pulls where the mob is near an obstacle that should be part of the path at all.
    • Fleeing AI.
  • Stressing anticheat:
    • False flag detection (jumping off Loch Modan dam, for example).
  • Record a full flight:
    • Changing channels properly.
    • Arriving at the ground, not in the air.
  • Testing abilities:
    • Backstabbing abilities should work properly on mobs, tricky movements and path AI should not let backstab a mob.
    • Blink on caves.
    • Polymorph on mounted mobs.*
    • Abilities that are usually broken or hard to get working.*
  • More technical stuff to show off.

It would be nice if besides this we can get to see some bugs that happened during the beta and now got fixed, to see the work progress. I don't think it's time to show quests or scripting in general, just because scripting has not even started yet.

I wanted to delve into these topics because I think they are things that should be working as of now; except those two marked as *, those may not be beta tested yet, but should be showed once beta testing is done. I think the focus of the video should be showing progress in general and showing the technical side of things (as the server tries to stand out as one of the more technical ones); Speaking of the video I think the duration should be what it takes to show all above mentioned in detail, we could be speaking of 30 minutes easy, and as minimalist as possible, the server is not ready to launch in the foreseeable months, so better to not to try to hype anything.

One thing that can be said for Kronos is that their announcement videos were epic, especially the ones for BWL and AQ. As far as I know they hired pros to create them, and it shows. The quality of those videos certainly upped the hype level. Not sure if Crestfall wants or needs such hype - but if it ever comes to that, the Kronos trailers might be a good source of inspiration to turn towards to.

Working stealth mechanic - both rogue and druid in cat form. Distract, Mind Soothe, Mind Control, using mobs skills. Proper threat/rage generation, item proc rates. Working windfury skill/totem, spell coefficients. All with some subtitles, no narrative and no flashiness. Calm music and longer videos.

I may be weird but I would actually like to see what's not working yet. To have a good idea of what’s left as well as showing that the dev team is confident in its capacity to fix it.

Who knows, maybe you will even get feedbacks on people outside the beta on how to fix some of the bugs.

That would be one hell of a transparency and really hype me about the project.

I know that scripting is not the most important thing right now but at some point I'd love to see some quests:

- Desolace escorts

- Desolace ghost-o-matic quest

- Tanaris and Feralas mechanical chicken escort

- Azshara Crew on fire quest

- Arathi pirate chain quest event

- Urok doomhowl LBRS event

... and basically any quest in game that require some more advanced scripts then just "kill 10 wolves" mechanics. Almost all private servers got some serious problems with this stuff.

Also I prefer some honest presentation of content for now, not some epic videos, which should be reserved for launch videos or major patches introductions.

On a more serious note, but still not too serious, don't just list out a bunch of features that are already expectations for the vanilla wow community.  Nostalrius Hype video will be my example:

"Pre-Nerf Alterac
PVP Ranking System
Blizzlike Leveling
No Shop
Progressive Realm
DDOS Mitigation
Large Dev Team
Stable Server
Over 4000 Subscribers
Old Items Restored
Challenging Encounters
Strong Anti-Cheat
40 Player Raids"

That list scrolled across the screen with random clips of mass encounters between players.  I'd say focus on what Crestfall is bringing new to the table, that's how you hype new people.  And don't just say random shit like "Challenging Encounters", "Stable Server", and "Over 4000 subscribers".

At this point the bast majority of the playerbase already know which things are usually bugged so I think the video should be a compilation of a few of those kind of mechanics in action.

Multiple player perspectives ideally.

Yeah, sorry about that. Just laziness. I'll morph the two for our purposes on suggestions.

1. What would you like to see in the video(s)?

Pet pathing, pet pathing, pet pathing. Especially in caves.

2. Why specifically do you want to see these things?

This is the thing I remember from my last experience on a Vanilla private server.

3. Should the videos contain a number of different things or concentrate on one specific element?

I don't mind a showcase of all the stuff that doesn't work elsewhere, but is fixed here.

4. How long should the video be?

I have no idea.

5. Would you prefer the videos to be low-key, technical and minimalist or OMG flashy neon awesomeness? Somewhere in between?

Just a straight-to-the-point list of working features with no frills and drama.

6. Lastly, should the video just let the facts speak for themselves or should we compare and contrast with stock MaNGOS servers?

Many people (including me) don't know how things should work, so they don't even realise when something is fixed. I can obviously spot for example blatant pathing issues when my pet just flies into the cave's ceiling, but I don't have a clue of the more complex problems, as 99% of my WoW career I've spent on private servers. I simply have no comparison.

Agree with Calfuron's post, hits the nail right on the proverbial noggin.

As for 6. I believe the team should just showcase their excellent work and let it speak for itself. The comparison's will come regardless and no doubt start arguments/flame wars with individuals of 'other' groups. This, for me, the team dont need to and shouldnt get involved in.

At this point, I'd settle for a shitmeme video. As long as something gets put out.
